Is Pectin Vegan?

If you’ve seen this strange ingredient in your jellies, desserts, or pie fillings, never fear! Pectin is on our side — totally cruelty-free and vegan. :)

This plant-derived compound comes from fruit/vegetable pulp and skin, and is especially present in oranges, apples, plums, and carrots. It can be purchased in powdered or liquid form, and forms a gel when combined with boiled water and sugar, then cooled. This makes it the perfect addition to gelatinous treats, like jellies and certain desserts.

Because pectin is a gelling agent, it’s sometimes replaced with gelatin, a non-vegan ingredient that’s derived from the skin, bones, and connective tissue of various animals. For this reason, it’s important to always check the ingredients list for any mention of this animal-based additive.

In conclusion, no need to avoid foods containing pectin. Just watch out for its not-so-animal-friendly counterpart, gelatin!
