The Top Plant-Based Vegan Milk Brands You Have to Try

Vegan milk, like other plant-based alternatives, has quickly become a popular consumer choice. Since plant-based milk is the savvy option for our health, the animals, and the environment, the demand for quality products only increases.

But what kind of vegan milk is the best for your requirements? It seems like every day we hear about a new kind of vegan milk available. We’re fortunate to live in a time where the products are plentiful, but the choices are overwhelming.

After doing some digging, we weighed all the pros and cons of each vegan milk. While we did eventually crown one milk the ultimate winner, we want you to know all your options, so here’s what we found.

Why Switch to Vegan Milk?

Still undecided about whether you should switch to plant-based milk? If you’ve grown up drinking dairy milk, it probably seems second nature. The dairy industry has done a decent job of convincing people that cow’s milk is essential for humans.

Let’s explore why vegan milk is the superior choice:

Cruelty-Free

Dairy cows live a painful life in a constant cycle of impregnation, birth, and milking. When their calves are born, they are taken away from their mothers so that humans can use the milk created for the baby. Those calves are frequently dehorned, castrated, and/or branded without painkillers. Calves are then overfed to reach an unnaturally heavyweight for slaughter. With plant-based milk, your dollar doesn’t go towards supporting any of this cruelty.

Better For Your Health

Dairy milk contains saturated fat, and high levels of saturated fat are linked to heart disease, diabetes, and Alzheimer’s disease. According to the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, dairy consumption is also linked to certain cancers, cognitive decline, and early death.

Vegan milk options contain less saturated fats, no hormones, and no antibiotics.

More Eco-Friendly

Dairy milk is not as environmentally friendly as vegan milk. Besides the excessive land use needed to farm them, cows produce greenhouse gases such as methane, nitrous oxide, and carbon dioxide.

One liter of cow's milk requires 1,050 liters of water, while one liter of soy milk needs only 297 liters! Evidently, vegan milk is the kinder choice for our animals, our bodies, and our planet.

How To Choose The Right Vegan Milk For You

Once you’ve decided to switch to plant milk, you have another choice before you. What kind of non-dairy milk is right for you? If you’re new to vegan milk options, the wide variety may surprise you.

Most people have heard of soy milk, one of the first non-dairy milk to appear in coffee shops. Almond, cashew, hazelnut, and coconut milk are also well-known dairy alternatives, although not as high in protein as soy.

Three of the more recently popular options are oat, hemp, and flax milk. While oat milk is full of fiber, it also often has more calories than most vegan milk. For those prone to food allergies, rice, or pea protein milk may be the answer.

Our Recommendations

While there’’s no one-size-fits-all milk perfect for every person, you can shop for a product that best serves your interests and needs. All of our suggestions are easy to find in stores and are shelf-stable products.

We recommend purchasing shelf-stable vegan milk options as these allow you to stock up, save space, and cut costs. Also, with their extended shelf life and no refrigeration requirements, you’ll have less waste.

Soy Milk

Wondering what milk has the most protein? Usually, this pick comes out on top! In fact, in this regard, it's right on par with dairy milk.

If you've ever tried soy milk, you know it has a very distinctive nutty flavor and creamy texture, and is in many ways similar to dairy milk. It's also typically great for frothing and for adding more protein to your smoothies! This drink has been around for a long time in Chinese culture, since it was an intermediary product used to create tofu. Did you know tofu is simply coagulated soy milk? So, it was always just a matter of time before this beverage was popularized as a standalone product.

As for its nutritional profile, this vegan milk is high in protein, and is often fortified with calcium, vitamin D, vitamin B12, and iron. Plus, soy milk can even help to lower blood sugar, unhealthy cholesterol, reduce your risk of osteoporosis, improve insulin sensitivity, and even boost your gut health by increasing your Bifidobacteria levels! Keep reading and check out some of the top brands you'll find on supermarket shelves today!

Oat Milk

Widely popularized by the Swedish brand 'Oatly', oat milk has taken its place within the plant milk market as one of America's top choices for coffee, cereal, and other breakfast foods. This beverage is known for its somewhat neutral flavor, creaminess, and overall similarity to dairy milk.

One thing you should know about oat milk is that it's usually made with added oils, emulsifiers, stabilizers, or gums to give it a creamier, more 'frothable' texture. So, it's not as natural as some of the other options in our list. That said, we believe it's a great choice for those starting their vegan journey because of its similarity to dairy milk.

Oat milk is also amazing for our planet! Its production requires a lot less water, land, and overall energy than dairy milk or even almond milk! So, if you're new to the plant-based diet, or if you're vegan for the planet and the animals, this is an excellent choice for you.

Our Pick: Califia Farms Protein Oat Plant Milk

Coconut Milk

Unlike all the other milk substitutes on our list, this pick has been around for millennia and is a traditional beverage often used in Asian cultures. It's also been used in traditional South American and Caribbean dishes for centuries.

Although coconut milk is traditionally thick and creamy, the modern versions you'll find in cartons are typically more watery and lower in fat. You will still find traditional coconut milk in canned varieties, however you may want to limit your consumption of this type of milk due to its high saturated fat content. That said, it's still nice to enjoy in piña coladas, rice dishes, soups, and curries!

Check out some of our favorite brands below.

Our Pick: So Delicious Organic Unsweetened Vanilla Coconut Milk

Our favorite coconut milk is the Organic Unsweetened Vanilla Coconutmilk Beverage from So Delicious. Ever heard of flax milk? This often underrated milk is naturally loaded with omega-3s and low in sugar. We believe flax should be consumed every single day as a plant-based source of omegas, so consuming it through your milk makes perfect sense!

Not only is flaxseed rich in healthy fats, it's also great for digestion as it's loaded with fiber. Check out the top brands currently offering flax milk below!

With 4g of dietary fiber and all-natural, flax-derived omega-3s, this nutritious milk is excellent in oatmeal, smoothies, coffee, baked goods, and so much more.

Shop On:

Almond Milk

Requiring just soaked almonds and water, almond milk has quickly become a favorite among dairy-free dieters and vegans alike. Its subtly sweet and nutty flavor, along with its creamy texture and overall simplicity have been a recipe for success over the past few decades.

However, there is a problem we'd like to address about this beverage! Almond milk requires a massive amount of water for its production, so it's not always the most eco-friendly choice. That said, it still requires less water than dairy milk. So, if this is your preferred swap, we think it's a step in the right direction! Plus, it's widely available at most grocery stores, restaurants, and coffee shops. So, check out some of the top brands and start swapping!

Our Pick: Silk Unsweet Almond Milk

Calcium is typically almond milk’s category. Silk’s Unsweet Almondmilk provides 30% of your daily calcium intake, for just 30 calories per cup. We also love that this milk has both zero added sugars and zero saturated fat!

In fact, it contains 5g of protein per serving, as well as 6% of your daily iron needs, with zero added nutrients!

Shop On:

Pea Milk

If you're cringing at the thought of drinking pea-flavored milk, never fear! The flavor of this plant milk is totally neutral, making it perfect for cooking, adding to hot beverages, or enjoying on its own.

A major benefit to pea milk is that it's high in protein, often made with pea protein isolate, water, and added nutrients. So, if your focus is nutrition, pea milk may be the right fit for you! Another added bonus is that its high-protein content often makes it great for frothing your coffee!

Our Pick: Ripple Unsweetened Original Plant-Based Milk

A great source of vitamin D from plant milk is Ripple’s Unsweetened Original Pea Milk. On top of providing 30% of your vitamin D RDA, it also offers a ton of calcium, B12, and even a bonus 32mg of DHA Omega-3s!

We love the idea of turning hemp seeds into milk! Why? These tiny seeds are packed with omegas, iron, calcium, protein, and so many more essential nutrients. This makes hemp seeds one of our favorite 'superfoods', and we love sprinkling them over EVERYTHING; soups, salads, oats, smoothies... you name it!

So, we suggest doing the same with your hemp milk! Go for an unsweetened version to incorporate it into dressings, soups, beverages, and more.

Our Pick: Hudson River Foods Unsweetened Hemp Milk

Cashew Milk

Cashew milk has been a long-time vegan favorite for its sweet and nutty flavor, creamy texture, and excellent nutrition. We think it's an especially great addition for cooking, because you can use it to create creamy sauces, soups, dressings, and more!

Something we love about cashews is their high iron content. Although many brands water down their milk and lose a lot of this iron as a result, you can always make this drink at home with a lot more nuts to enjoy a creamier texture and better nutritional profile. However, we do think there are plenty of brands doing cashew milk right, which you can find below!

Our Pick: JOI Organic Cashew Milk Base

Not only does JOI's cashew milk base make creamy and delicious vegan milk; it could also be your new secret ingredient in any creamy dish! If you've ever come across a plant-based recipe that requires you to have 'soaked cashews overnight', you understand the struggle. JOI removes the stress by providing a quick and convenient solution to this dilemma in the form of sustainable and organic blended cashews.

Shop On:

Hazelnut Milk

Nutella flavored vegan hot chocolate? Yes, please! Our favorite way to use hazelnut milk is in hot drinks like coffees and hot chocolate, for its wonderful characteristic flavor. However, hazelnuts are also very high in vitamin E and iron, so it's certainly worth using in other plant-based meals and beverages, too!

Check out the following brands for pure, unaltered hazelnut flavor and minimal ingredients.

Our Pick: Elmhurst Unsweetened Milked Hazelnuts

If you enjoy yummy hazelnut flavored beverages, you have to try this hazelnut milk made with 4x more nuts than similar products! This makes it a totally organic and gluten/soy-free pick, ideal for those with allergies or food sensitivities. Try this whole food plant-based milk today to supercharge your daily oats and smoothies!

Shop On:

Rice Milk

Although you can make rice milk at home, this is a product we'd recommend getting at the supermarket in its fortified version, as the homemade variety does not usually provide much nutrition. Although rice (especially brown rice) is a healthful staple consumed all over the world, it cannot compare to nut milks, which can provide higher levels of micronutrients and healthy fats when 'milked'.

However, if you're simply going for a light, low-calorie milk that tastes great on its own as a refreshing drink, rice milk is an excellent option! In its unsweetened form, it's low in sugar, fat, sodium, and contains no saturated fat.

Our Pick: Dream Enriched Unsweetened Rice Drink

Crafted with organic brown rice and plant-based oils, Dream's original rice milk is an ultra-nutritious choice for the entire family. It's fortified with over 20% of your daily vitamin D, calcium, and B12 requirement, and even with some vitamin A and phosphorus! Add this light plant-based milk to smoothies, or enjoy it on its own for a smooth and refreshing beverage.

Shop On:

Did you know pistachio milk is expected to be the next big plant milk? Due to its healthy fat content, high protein content, and viability as a barista-style swap, pistachio milk is quickly gaining popularity at supermarkets and coffee shops alike.

The major benefit of pistachio milk over oat milk in your coffee, is that it's much more natural and requires no added oils to froth and add sweet creaminess to your lattes! So, if you want to upgrade to a more natural milk for your morning cuppa, we highly recommend giving pistachio milk a try. Take a look at our top brand suggestions here!

Our Pick: Three Trees Pistachio Nutmilk

Made with 4x more nuts than similar milks and boasting 4g of natural plant protein, Three Trees' organic pistachio nutmilk is an excellent addition to smoothies, lattes, and baked goods. Plus, it contains no necessary additives or added sugars!

Shop On:

We recommend pouring a bit of chia milk in all possible meals and beverages for tons of extra nutrition!

Our Pick: SOW Unsweetened Original Chia Milk

An excellent source of omega-3s, protein, fiber, calcium, and iron for just 21 total calories, SOW's chia milk is a must-try for all vegans! It also contains significant amounts of vitamin E and A. Try it in your cereal, baked goods, or in any dish that calls for milk to add tons of nutrition!

If you've ever tried tahini, you know ground sesame seeds can be an acquired taste. However, for all sesame fans, you're in luck! In their milked form, they too are packed to the brim with essential nutrition and their signature flavor!

Our Pick: Hope and Sesame Unsweetened Original Sesame Milk

At 8g of protein, this choice is comparable to other high-protein vegan milks like soy milk! However, it's also a great source of calcium and vitamin D, all for just 90 calories. Since it has a subtle taste, we think it may be best used in smoothies and baked goods for extra nutrition!

Mooala Original Banana Milk

Made with just water, organic bananas, and organic sunflower seeds, it's hard to believe this plant milk boasts such a mild flavor. Plus, it smells like banana bread! As is to be expected of bananas, it's a good source of potassium, but also of calcium, vitamin B6, magnesium and copper. Have it in your cereal, smoothies, or on its own for a yum, nutritious pick-me-up!

Shop On:

Why Unsweetened?

As you can see from our recommendations, we love the unsweetened varieties of vegan milk. Sticking to those types will make sure the sugar content of your beverage stays low. Regardless of the plant-based milk you choose, the unsweetened version should have a maximum of 1 gram of sugar.

If you are counting your calories to lose weight, Almond milk wins with just 25 calories per serving (one cup).

Our Verdict: Soy Milk Wins!

When we researched the various options for vegan milk, we consistently saw soy milk come out as the winner. It has 8 grams of protein, is often fortified with 50-120% of your B12 needs, and is also loaded with calcium and vitamin D. It also does not contain any carrageenan, a common additive with inflammatory gastrointestinal consequences.

Besides the nutritional factors, it’s also one of the best kinds of milk for the environment. With a mild flavor that blends nicely into your morning coffee, what’s not to love?

Is Soy Safe for You?

You may have heard that soy milk causes breast cancer, but research from the MayoClinic indicates eating a diet rich in quality soy foods actually reduces the risk of breast cancer.

The reason people believed this myth was because of the isoflavones in soy. These nutrients have chemical structures that appear like estrogen. Since high levels of estrogen are linked to breast cancer risk, this made people nervous. However, the phytoestrogens found in soy are not the same as the estrogen found in a woman’s body, and they are safe to eat.

One important thing to note here is that much of the soy grown in the U.S. is genetically modified and sprayed with herbicides. To avoid this problem, make sure to buy certified organic soy products.
