Are KIND Bars Vegan?

You may have come across KIND bars, and thought they must be vegan, since they’re made out of natural plant-based ingredients like nuts, oats, dried fruit, and seeds. However, there are a handful of troublesome ingredients in KIND bars for vegans. These include: honey, milk powder, milk protein isolate, palm oil, and “natural flavor”—whatever that means!

So, what does that leave us with? This can be tricky. While some are labelled ‘vegan’ on their website, others have no animal products in their ingredient list, but could contain trace amounts of milk. These are negligible and thus, acceptable to most vegans. However, this means they would not be listed as ‘vegan’, and could be less easy to identify as such. Others contain ‘natural flavor’ and are not listed as vegan, despite having no other possibly animal-derived products listed. Here’s a breakdown of which products are certainly, or almost certainly vegan-friendly:

KIND Healthy Grains Granola (Some)

All of KIND’s Healthy Grains granola products, with the exception of their ‘Probiotic Clusters’, ‘Almond Butter Clusters’, and ‘Oats & Honey Granola with Toasted Coconut’ varieties, are vegan-friendly. We recommend pairing their vegan options with a yum plant-based yogurt, like those listed in this article!

KIND Oatmeal (Not Listed as Vegan)

Although they are not listed as vegan and some do contain ‘natural flavor’, these products do not contain any other possibly animal-derived ingredients. Therefore, we have no reason to believe they are not vegan-friendly. However, if you are dubious of the mysterious ‘natural flavor’ ingredient (which could be animal or plant-derived), you’ll likely want to steer clear of the KIND oatmeal products it’s listed on. These include: Dark Chocolate Almond, Apple Cinnamon Almond, and Cranberry Almond. So, it leaves you with Oats & Almond as the only surefire vegan product.

KIND Clusters (Not Listed as Vegan)

Another product range that is not listed as vegan, but is probably vegan-friendly, are their KIND Clusters. None of these products contain honey, milk powder, or even palm oil. However, the Dark Chocolate Nuts & Sea Salt Nut Clusters do contain ‘natural flavor’, which we can’t assure you is vegan. Also, these products are processed on equipment that comes in contact with milk and/or eggs, which is important to note in case you’re allergic, but as far as the majority of vegans are concerned, does not render the products non-vegan.

KIND Frozen (Not Listed as Vegan)

These bars are made with almond milk, dark chocolate, nut butter, and chopped almonds! Available in two flavors—Dark Chocolate Almond Sea Salt and Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter—they are both honey and dairy-free! However, they do contain palm oil, and are processed on shared equipment with dairy-containing products.

KIND Bark (Not Listed as Vegan)

The only possibly vegan-friendly KIND Bark product is their Dark Chocolate Almond & Sea Salt flavor. However, it’s still a risk, considering it contains ‘natural flavors’, which could have been extracted from animal and/or plant-derived sources.
