Is Gnocchi Vegan?
If you’re wondering which types of pasta you can enjoy as a vegan, you’ll be happy to know that gnocchi is almost always animal-free! However, that’s not to say eggs, milk, or other animal derivatives aren’t added into, or over gnocchi by certain brands and restaurants.
Potato gnocchi are essentially small dumplings made out of plain mashed potatoes (no butter or dairy added), flour, and salt. However, the original recipe it’s derived from called for eggs and semolina, the flour used to make most types of pasta. This means, you may come across varieties of gnocchi prepared according to the original recipe at some Italian restaurants or at the supermarket. To be safe, it’s always a good idea to check the ingredients label before purchasing any type of processed food.
In addition, you’ll want to watch out for the sauce added to your gnocchi. While some restaurants prepare their potato gnocchi simply with tomato sauce, olive oil, and herbs, others will use a white sauce, or top their otherwise vegan-friendly dish with parmesan. You’ll want to ask your waiter about how their gnocchi is prepared, to be sure.
