Is Sugar Vegan?

Is sugar vegan

As harmless as it seems, sugar is not always vegan. Rest assured—it does not contain any animal by-products. However, since our goal as a community is to minimize animal exploitation, it’s important to point out that certain sugars are refined using cow bone char.

The problem with finding the right sugar as a vegan, is that it’s almost impossible to know which brands use bone char as a refining agent, unless it’s indicated on the package. Likewise, it’s difficult to determine which conventional, “accidentally vegan” foods contain sugar that has been refined with animal bones.

The good news is, this practice is unnecessary, and as a result, many sugar brands around the world use vegan-friendly refining agents, like granular carbon or plant seeds, instead. However, most big American brands do continue to heavily employ the bone char refinement method. This is partially due to the fact that many food manufacturers prefer white sugar, which does not alter the color of the final product.

When In Doubt, Go Organic

The number one way to find vegan sugar is by looking for “95% certified organic” or “100% certified organic” sugar, which is always refined without bone char! These companies typically use lime or other plant-based refining agents, instead. Not only is organic sugar better for the animals, it’s also better for the planet! Organic farms typically require less energy to operate, use little to no chemical fertilizers, and generate less water and soil pollution.
