Is Falafel Vegan?
While falafel is traditionally made with just chickpeas, flour (sometimes, as a binder), herbs, and spices, that’s not always the case at all restaurants, or when buying a store-bought mix. Some contain dairy within the mix, or are prepared in a wrap with dairy or cheese. For example, you may order a falafel pita and find that it was topped with feta. For this reason, the best way to ensure a vegan meal is to ask for no dairy in your falafel dish.
If your falafel wrap features a white creamy sauce, it could be either yogurt sauce or tahini. The yogurt, you’ll want to stay away from, since this ingredient is typically dairy-based. However, tahini sauces almost always contain only tahini, water, and sometimes garlic, despite their ultra-creamy texture and flavor.
