Top 6 Vegan Candles For Your Home
Looking for the perfect pure, cruelty-free candle to help soothe your mind after a long day? We can help! When purchasing a vegan, non-toxic candle, there are a couple things to keep in mind. Firstly, natural and non-toxic do not always equal ‘vegan’. Many times, these labels can mean a candle is made with beeswax, another natural alternative. It may also contain other animal-derived ingredients, like honey or tallow. In fact, some candles’ formulas are even tested on animals, which would be troublesome for most vegans.
That’s why it can sometimes be tricky finding a candle that checks out with all ideal requirements — non-toxic, cruelty-free, organic, and vegan. So, we did the research for you! Keep reading to discover which candles are best for your health, our planet, and the animals.
What To Look For In a Non-Toxic, Eco-Friendly Candle
Wick
Your cleanest options will include 100% cotton or wooden wicks, like Cherrywood wicks. This will help avoid the buildup of ashy residue.
It’s best to avoid wicks with a metal core, which may contain lead. Also, take the size of the wick into account — large wicks can cause the container to rapidly heat up and produce great amounts of soot. On the other hand, if it’s too small the fragrance won’t be very strong, and can produce leftover wax.
Wax
Paraffin (made from petroleum or coal), and stearin (typically derived from animal fat) waxes release chemicals into the air when burned. Breathing in these particles could be damaging to your health and could even cause conditions like lung inflammation and lung cancer. Choose a clean-burning soy wax as a non-toxic alternative, since it can be easily cleaned with soap and water. Soy candles will also typically burn longer, and the leftover wax is biodegradable!
Fragrance
The main problem with candle fragrance is that companies are legally allowed to label “fragrance” as an ingredient without explaining what It contains. This makes it impossible for the consumer to determine if the product contains potentially harmful ingredients.
To be safe, go for those that specify that they’ve used 100% naturally-derived essential oils, and are pthalate-free.
